Girl Talk

I’m linking up with my sweet friend, Alissa, over at Rags to Stitches.

If we were meeting up today for some much needed girl time, I’d tell you to bring over some swimsuits and towels because summer has officially started and we are loving sunny Southern California’s weather!
We’d get the kids lathered in sunscreen and I’d jump right into my week.
I got a call from my son’s principal last week saying he would be getting an award at the flag ceremony for their character counts word of the month, “Trustworthiness.”
Words can’t describe how proud I was of him. He is a good, sweet boy and I think this was a perfect award for him to get. I can always trust him to tell the truth, so much so that he will tell me beforehand if he plans on sneaking something. I can trust him to be a kind friend and a good big brother.
I would tell you that I had a hard time getting him to school on time that morning. I would then make a joke about always having a hard time getting him there on early day because it starts at 8:15 and he goes at 11 every other day of the week.
He stood proud when his name was called and the whole school clapped. He even had a few big kids that he knows give him high fives afterwards which melted my heart.
I was like the paparazzi right along with every other parent whose child got the award.
I quickly hugged him, and told him I’d be back for promotion.
Rushed back to the car with both the girls, threw the stroller, diaper bag, & camera bag in and headed to get last minute teacher gifts. We then hurried home, I bathed the girls, did my makeup and rushed back out the door for promotion.
I’d tell you it was hard for me that Steve was gone, but I think it was harder on him that he was gone.
I know some may say it’s just kindergarten promotion, but it was the award also, and there’s just been a lot going on in May & June that he hates to miss out on.
We can do hard things.
Sigh.
The promotion was cute. It was funny to watch him tease the girl sitting next to him.
His face describes his personality so well. Smirking and smiling as he’s walking up to his teacher.
I got flowers and a big thank you for being room mom.
I would tell you that I loved being room mom and learned to do simple—that kindergarteners love simple.
Special was what I enjoyed doing. A little bit of simple and a little bit of over the top and I would make special.
I also learned to delegate. People liked to help which I was so grateful for.
At the end the morning and afternoon teachers announced them as the future class of 2026.
I got chills and tears started coming.
I totally blame my mom, but couldn’t help it.
In this year, we’ve lost teeth together,
we’ve done oodles of homework together,
we’ve practiced for spelling tests together,
I’ve watched him ace every single spelling test which I’m so proud of and so nervous for when the perfectionist misses, but I keep reminding him it is ok to miss some as long as he tries his best,
I’ve watched him learn to cut, glue, add, and subtract,
I’ve watched him learn how to read,
I’ve seen little girls chasing him around serenading him,
I’ve seen how pleasant he is to be around in class and what a good friend he is,
and most importantly I’ve watched him become more of his own little person.

Like a nut, I’m now talking through tears.
He’s made great choices and I’m sure he’s made some not great choices.
He thinks it’s a disaster if he forgets his library book.
I’m sure he’s run in areas of the school he’s supposed to walk.
He’s probably eaten his treat first in his lunch box instead of the healthy stuff.
Thanks to a bus ride for a field trip, he now thinks the bus is cooler than chauffeur mom.

I was thankful to have my wonderful parents, sister in law, and a couple of my nieces & a nephew there.
We had my camera and we were taking pictures and video with our phones so that dad had plenty to see.
They held a picnic at the playground after and I did really well until the teachers hugged me.
As excited as we are to move, there are some things that are not so exciting. I asked if he wanted some pictures with his friends and he was confused. I told him since we were moving he wouldn’t see most of them again because he was going to a new school with new friends.
It makes my stomach flip flop thinking about it.
So we will change the subject.
I got a picture and signed him out for the last time.
We had a great weekend with friends and family and we are loving summer time.

At this point, I’m hoping you aren’t totally bored out of your mind and would feel up to telling me about your latest adventures.

  • Stopping by from Alissa’s Coffee Date Friday.

Your kiddos are absolutely adorable and I know you’re a proud mama for getting such a great award! It’s confirmation that you’re doing something right.

Hope you and your family have a great weekend.

  • Aw, sweet friend! If we were having coffee, I would be totally tearing up and sharing so many of the same thoughts/emotions with you! Watching Iyla finish Kindergarten is so emotional! She has grown up SO much this year! I am SO proud of the sweet, wonderful, bright girl that she is — but it is very emotional to realize how quickly this year has flown by! Big Hug!

  • So cute!!! I loved reading this story about your cute little boy. You take absolutely stunning pictures. So excited to be following you now.
