What to Wear for Family Pictures – Guest Post by Trina Harris Photography

I’m so excited to have Trina guest posting today!
I know I stress and overthink about what I want my family to wear for pictures and who better to get tips from than an actual photographer! Enjoy!
One of the first questions a lot of my clients ask me is “what should I wear?!” with a small amount of panic in their voice 🙂 It can be a daunting decision because you want pictures taken, you obviously want to look good. Well don’t fear, whether you are taking individual, couple or family portraits I can give you a few tips that can make this decision a little easier.
1. Props: cool for some people, not cool for others. I personally think that a prop can be a really fun and unique way to get an awesome family picture. Everyone can hold up an umbrella…

2. Accessorize! Wear some heavy jewelry, a scarf, a big belt, headband or hat.

These additional items read confidence on the camera and in your pictures.

3. Don’t be afraid of colors, stripes and patterns. They can bring life and vibrancy to a photo.

4. Avoid anything too shiny or reflective. Logos and words can be way too distracting, try to stay away from them.

5. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Patterns, stripes, colors and accessories can be and is a wonderful thing for pictures but make sure that it’s not over-kill. Use an editing eye.

6. Not too “matchy matchy”. The whole blue jeans with a white shirt had its time in the photography world but as of right now it’s gone. The current family photo approach is more individualistic and eclectic.

For cohesion it’s a good idea to use a couple of color tones used in various ways to tie everyone together. Think about the climate, location and backdrop for your pictures and build from there.

Thanks Trina!
