Bee, Sunflower & Ladybug Cupcakes!

One of my favorite bunco prizes EVER is the “Hello! Cupcake” book! It has a ton of incredible ideas and that’s where I got the sunflower idea.
You’ll need:
-1 box of French Vanilla cake mix along with the ingredients the box calls for
-butter {unsalted or salted is ok}
-sour cream
-box of vanilla pudding
So, to start, I used a french vanilla Betty Crocker cake mix. Follow the directions on the box, but, I like to replace the vegetable oil with unsalted butter {you could use salted, too, I just like to keep a little of the unsalted stuff in my freezer…it goes bad faster than the salted butter, so, freezer is safer} Martha Stewart and the Barefoot Contessa use it a lot in baking recipes, so, I figure it’s good enough for me! Also, I add about 1/3 cup of sour cream and a box of vanilla pudding.
After mixing, I put the mix into a big ziploc bag {put the bag in a big can and pour from the bowl} then cut a corner and it makes it so much easier to fill the cupcake liners without making a mess. This is a Hello! Cupcake tip that I love!! Fill each about 2/3 unless you like big rounded cupcakes.  I used a special Beehive cupcake tray I couldn’t resist buying at Deseret Book.  The bag makes it especially quick and easy to fill mini cupcake liners.  Bake cupcakes as usual.  If you don’t have special frosting tips, you can reinforce the corner of a ziploc bag with scotch tape and cut a “v” or an “m” to create different effects.  For the sunflower petals we cut an “m.”
The honey bees on top of the hive were just made from Starbursts.  1/3 for the head and the rest for the body.  After, I just drew lines with the black gel frosting.  The wings are just made out of paper, but, I think if I were to do it again, I would’ve used wax paper, or maybe vellum.

I’ll be starting my own preschool in the fall {YAY!!} and so I made the Beehive cupcakes for my little preschoolers. I took over a cd of some fun songs we’ll be singing, and a registration packet for the moms with the Beehives.
For the sunflowers, just frost the cupcake green, add an oreo, then add petals with yellow in two layers on the oreo.  The ladybug is an m&m, and we used a tube of black gel frosting to decorate.
Aren’t they so fun?!
They were really simple, but fun!
