If we were meeting up today for some much needed girl time, I would invite you in to have some leftover birthday cake from last night after we celebrated my mom’s birthday.
I would tell you how proud I was of my son and I. I have the hardest time letting go, especially in the kitchen. I usually need things done fast and will tell my kids “1 minute” “hang on” or “this part is only for mommy.” While on some things that rings true, some of the time it’s just me being too controlling. He can pour water, oil, and cut open a package. I just haven’t wanted to let go.
Until today.
He was excited to surprise Grandma with a cake.
He was thrilled just to pick out the flavor.
I needed to feed the baby her oatmeal and decided he could make it at the table while I was feeding her.
A mom tries to be in 3 places at once, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen, right?!
We had plenty of ingredients, just in case we had a spill, and because of this sweet deal, I had a few extra cake mixes.
He hasn’t stopped talking about cracking the eggs all day.
Even though one burst open, spraying his shirt causing him to drop the whole thing in the mix, he was beaming with pride.
That smile stayed on his face all the way through his open house where he got to show me all of his work.
I’m the room mom so I’m in there for parties, but you’d think it was my first time in.
I would tell you that taking pictures of 3 kids is really hard work.
I would tell you that I bribe my son and he eats it all up.
I would tell you that our baby has found her voice and loves it.
Our toddler doesn’t like pictures and won’t take a bribe.
I would ask for suggestions.
I would also point out that these pictures were taking after an Easter egg hunt…in March.
I would have to bring up my parents and tell you what saints they are.
Living with them for 2 years has been such a blessing in my life.
Not many parents or in laws would go for this.
My parents tell me I can come visit my kids whenever I want.
They live for this.
I live for this.
I would probably tell you with tears in my eyes that my mom sings to my kids every night,
that my dad plays tennis and golf in the backyard with the 2 olders,
that he plays paddy cake with my baby,
that she jumps on the trampoline with them,
she always has the bottom over stocked with donuts and “bedtime snacks,”
she plays superheroes with them,
they both come and say hello every morning,
and they watch me grow and learn from my mistakes and triumphs as a mother.
I would also tell you I’m going to be 1 year older tomorrow! Hopefully wiser too!
What would you tell me?
xo,

your kiddos are so cute. 🙂 when I lived at home, my baby sister (13 years younger than me) always wanted to help me bake, and I had the *hardest* time letting go of that control to let her do things!
hope your birthday is a wonderful one! 🙂
