My son came in tonight and said, “Mom, did you know that if your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough?” I kind of giggled and asked where on earth he heard that from. It was a quick change from reading bedtime stories about make believe spirit animals. He had heard it from a Disney commercial and I guess it had stuck with him for the rest of the day. We spent a few minutes talking about the quote and what we thought it meant.
Now that he is in bed, I’ve had a few minutes to think about what I would have said had I been ready for the comment.
And I realized I wouldn’t have had a great answer prepared even if I would have had all day to ponder it, because I’m one of the biggest scaredy cats I know.
I like too many things and so many people and spend my time learning about a handful of different things and exploring new places.
I can’t put a pin on one thing that I want to be doing. Sometimes my dreams change from month to month.
The one thing that I’ve always wanted to do and love more than anything is being with my family.
That trumps it all.
I had an interesting conversation with a friend today who attended a conference last week and they walked away with gratitude for the unwavering amount of stability their family brought them.
After lots of networking with huge brands, meeting with successful entrepreneurs, & being told that they are undervaluing the products their company sells, it was a relief to come home to family.
I have felt that same relief when I’ve come home from conferences. My family grounds me. They bring me back to my reality. They support my dreams and are my biggest cheerleaders.
Sometimes I wish I could see myself the same way my family sees me & I might have more confidence to pursue some of my dreams.
Instead of seeing myself juggling a gazillion hats, dropping a few along the way, making cereal for dinner too often, & forgetting to finish homework, I would like to be able to give myself some more credit.
Believe you can and you’re halfway there, right?
I think that is the response I would give my little boy. If you can dream it, you can do it.

One thing I’ve learned being a teacher is that sometimes kids have the most wisdom of all. Sounds like your boy is a smart one;)
