I’m sharing this 5 minute cake banner over at Thirty Handmade Days today. Head over and see how much I love simplicity.
We had quite the weekend over here. On Friday I thought it’d be fun for my son to have a late night with his guys. We had most of the neighborhood over here, had drinks & cookies from Sodalicious and watched a movie. Not long after the movie ended, our little boy & 1 little girl woke up with the flu. Our other little girl had symptoms the next morning. I packed up the kids and headed over to urgent care in a beautiful blizzard. Needless to say, our weekend of playing in the snow & heading up to the mountains took a quick turn. We spent it cuddling, watching movies on repeat, and drinking lots of Gatorade. Saturday is usually a day where I can tackle some of my to do list so when Sunday rolled around I was feeling a little behind and antsy to get things done.
I wanted to include my kids in making the post for Thirty Handmade Days because it really was an easy project that I thought they’d love, but they were watching a show and remember I was “a day behind,” so I decided to hurry and keep moving so I could take pictures while it was still light.
My girls came over and were so intrigued with this fun pink stuff. They asked if they could add sprinkles and write some stuff of their own. I went to the kitchen and grabbed some extra parchment paper and when I got back, the littlest was putting sprinkles everywhere. The letters were smeared and sprinkles were rolling on the table and onto the floor.
Without thinking, I told them to go in the other room and to stop touching everything.
Watching them run off discouraged and sad, I stood baffled that I had just let that happen.
Here I am, making a cake that they are hoping to be able to help with and a simple banner, and I was too impatient to let them help.
Motherhood is the greatest and the hardest thing I’ve ever done and luckily for me, my children are the most forgiving little humans there are.
I waited a minute, rolled out a lot of extra parchment paper, called them back in and gave them free reign of the sprinkles and frosting bag. We probably wrote, “love you,” 20 times and spilled a million tiny sprinkles. We wrote their names, X’s & O’s, made up phrases that would go well with Valentine’s Day. I’m so glad we wrote, “love you,” a handful of times because their little hands broke almost all of them while we were putting them in the cake.
One of my favorite quotes is, “Motherhood is a calling. It is not a hobby. It is not something to do if you can squeeze the time in. It is what God gave you time for.”
This cake topper might be unevenly covered in sprinkles. The “V” in love might not be as pointed as I would have liked, but this quick craft became something more precious to me than a perfect cake topper. It turned into an Aha moment of some sorts.
A few quick moments that reminded me to be the type of mother that my mom has been to me.
To make your own cake topper, you need candy melts.
Melt them. Put them in a frosting bag. I used Tip #4. Write your phrase on parchment paper and put sprinkles on before the candy hardens.
Be mindful of certain phrases, like Sprinkled with Love, i’s are tricky 😉
